IIoT Trends in 2020

The Internet of Things is one of the biggest and fastest-growing technologies of this decade. It took off with a very slow start but with time, as the technology has matured more and more devices have been connected to the Internet, strengthening the IoT network. In the year 2020, the devices connected to the internet are going to be double that of what the number was in 2015- an estimated 3 billion devices. With such widespread use of IoT, there are going to be a number of emerging trends next year. In this article, we are going to talk about some of the major trends and discuss why they hold such significance.

Smart Cities:

We have already seen smart homes all around the world, in which all internet devices are interconnected. 2020 is going to be the year that takes this technology to the next level. We’ll be seeing smart cities emerging around the world. A smart city would be one where all devices, buildings, grids etc. are connected to the internet and share data with each other to run it with much higher efficiencies than before.

Cybersecurity Laws:

While cybersecurity laws are not that common around the world, there have been a huge number of cybercrimes reported in the past few years. With the more widespread use of IoT, the rate of cybercrimes is going to double, with cybercrimes ranging from online harassment to bringing down the complete systems of cities by compromising IoT devices. Thus, in 2020, we are going to be seeing a lot more effort in combatting these crimes with the introduction of new laws aimed at eliminating cybercrime around the world.

Use of Blockchain:

Out of all the trends discussed in this article, the increased use of blockchain is going to be the most significant one. With more and more devices connected to the internet, everything becomes more vulnerable to cyber-attacks especially when all the data is kept at one place. Blockchain is the only way to overcome this problem by dividing the data into millions of pieces so it’s not vulnerable to hackers’ attacks. Blockchain is the only way to help people trust the use of IoT.

Focused education and training:

Unlike the past, where educational degrees and training used to be very general and employees were taught to be jack of all trades, the future holds a different way of education and training. In 2020, we are going to see more focused education and training. A person who’s going to work in IoT or blockchain would only focus on that part of the job and nothing else, because more than versatility, jobs in future would require expertise.

Widespread use of IoT in the health and transport sector:

We have already seen the use of IoT in industries and households. In the coming year, an increasing number of businesses are going to jump on this bandwagon. The healthcare and transport industry is going to be one of the first as they are in the most need of this modern infrastructure.

In conclusion, no matter what business or industry you’re in, you should start thinking about investing in IoT and upgrading your infrastructure. Adapting to a world with a strong IoT presence is going to be essential in the very near future.
